Francis on women & Cuba

I sent this article alert to friends: Best comment I've ever read about Francis & women! When it comes to women, Francis has 5 strikes but he's not out. Poet John Chuchman emailed in response, Two outs bottom of ninth   I expect it’ll go into additional innings. Tom Reese’s analysis recalls all the embarrassing missteps of the pope in his statements about women—his naïve acceptance of past perceptions. If you’ve been following the issue, you’ll find them here. They were red flags for me.   Reese explains them in the same way I did but more knowledgeably. I had intuitive glimmerings; he gives the evidence. To Chris ( see comments in older posts ) I repeat: Read more of my writing to learn what I really say about the divinity of Jesus and all creation. Pope opens Cuba to U.S.   December 18, 2014 I give you stories of interest to Catholics, and maybe others because of Pope Francis’ popularity as well as the popularity of religious sist...

Lincoln's Death Dream

Lincoln's Death Dream  April 15 Abraham Lincoln died 150 years ago today. Larry Dossey, prominent physician, best-selling author, and lecturer in places like the Mayo Clinic and Harvard, has written several books about the power of consciousness. I quote him in God Is Not Three Guys in the Sky , where I argue that Jesus’ miracles really happened. Dossey tells the story of Lincoln’s death dream, which is well-known, but I had not read the entire account as told by Lincoln’s law partner. The rest of this post is from Larry Dossey’s Be Careful What You Pray For…: You Just Might Get It . One of the most celebrated examples of the precognition of death took place in the life of Abraham Lincoln. Shortly after he was nominated for the presidency, Lincoln began having frightening dreams in which he saw himself dead. He revealed them to his wife and his most intimate friends. Ward Lamon, his former law partner who subsequently served as marshal of the District of Colum...

When the fruit is ripe

“When the fruit is ripe, it falls.”   Ralph Waldo Emerson For more than five years I have devoted energy and time to serving Mary Magdalene, First Apostle, a Catholic womanpriest community—writing for it, writing about it, talking about it, promoting it. It has been fulfilling and satisfying. I think women priests are the most effective challenge to the Vatican as it continues its unjust treatment of women. I will continue to promote MMFA and Roman Catholic Womenpriests (RCWP). They have enriched my life and I expect this to continue. MMFA has been a way for me to find out about myself. It has been a good chapter in my life, one that helped to shape me into the person I am. But when the fruit is ripe, it falls. T he time became right for me to leave the community as an active member. While the decision was forming in me, I expected sadness to cloud my days afterward. Instead, relief and excitement bubbled up even before I left the meeting that clinched it. In the...

When Jesus Became God

During my senior year in college Fr. Jerome, later Abbot Jerome, introduced us to historical-critical study of scripture. It was the permission I needed to begin my lifelong quest in search of what’s wrong and what’s right in religion. I’m not satisfied learning something for myself, I want others to know the fascinating truth too. I have read hundreds of books on Christian teaching and its evolvement, none clearer than Richard Rubenstein’s When Jesus Became God: The Epic Fight over Christ’s Divinity in the Last Days of Rome . It reads like a thriller novel, full of suspense and violence, hostile accusations, and surprising plot twists. But these events really happened; they were not contrived for a novel. Here I continue the tale started in the previous post. The first followers of Jesus were mesmerized by his unique teaching and, to use a modern term, his charisma. He seemed to have a privileged connection with God. Like all shamans, he put people in touch with Holiness. Jes...
